BAGAMAT saklaw ng mandato ang pakikipag-ugnayan sa ibang bansa, nilinaw ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) na hindi mandato ng kagawaran ang pag-aresto kay dating Ako Bicol partylist Rep. Zaldy Co na nagtatago sa Portugal para makaiwas sa kasong may kaugnayan sa flood control scandal.
Inilabas ng DFA ang pahayag matapos magpasaring si Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla na ang DFA umano ang dapat manguna sa pagpapauwi sa puganteng kongresistang may hawak na Portuguese passport.
Ayon kay Foreign Affairs spokesperson Angelica Escalona, hindi solong responsibilidad ng DFA ang pagpapauwi kay Co dahil kailangang din ang tulong ng DILG at ng International Police Criminal Organization (Interpol).
“While the DFA values the DILG’s collaboration, the DFA clarifies that Mr. Co’s arrest and repatriation involve coordinated law enforcement and judicial processes, particularly Interpol coordination,” paliwanag ni Escalona.
“Sec. Remulla does not fully capture this whole-of-government approach, which requires joint action across concerned government agencies.”
Tiniyak naman ng opisyal na handa ang DFA na magbigay ng diplomatic assistance “within its mandate and in line with established protocols.”
Si Co na lumisan noong Hulyo 2025, ay target ng warrant of arrest na inilabas ng Sandiganbayan kaugnay ng maanomalyang proyekto sa Oriental Mindoro.
