BAHAGYANG hinablig ni Senate President Francis Escudero ang mga reelectionist senators at iba pang kandidatong kalahok sa halalan sa Mayo kaugnay ng sinapit ni former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Panawagan ni Escudero sa mga kapwa politiko, iwasan sakyan ang pag-aresto sa dating pangulo sa kampanya para lang maungusan ang kalaban.
Aniya, lubhang sensitibo ang ang isyu ng pagdakip kay Duterte, kaya’t hindi nararapat na gamitin para isulong ang sariling interes sa politika.
“I also call on those running in the midterm elections to refrain from using this issue to fan the flames of partisanship in order to further their candidacies as this is a serious issue that involves lives and should not be trifled with for petty personal or political gain,” wika ng lider ng senado.
Inaresto si Duterte paglapag sa Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) galing sa Hong Kong saka dinala sa Villamor Airbase sa Pasay City. Noong gabi ng Marso 11, kaagad inilipad si Duterte kasama ang tatlong personal na pinili patungong Dubai para mag-layover saka dumiretso sa The Hague sa Netherlands upang doon ikulong.
Nahaharap si Duterte sa kasong crimes against humanity hinggil sa pagkamatay ng libu-libong pipitsugin drug pusher at user, ngunit hindi ginalaw ang mga bigtime drug lord.
Nadamay sa mahigit 30,000 biktima ng Oplan Tokhang ang maraming inosenteng sibilyan at menor de edad tulad ng estudyanteng si Kian Delos Santos, 17-anyos na pinatay noong 2017 sa kasagsagan ng war on drugs, sa Caloocan City.
Bukod kay Duterte, kasama sa kinasuhan si Senador Ronald Dela Rosa, dating hepe ng Philippine National Police (PNP) na nagpatupad ng Oplan Tokhang na base sa records ng pulisya, umabot sa 6,000 indibidwal ang naitumba. Ngunit base naman sa naitala ng ilang human rights groups, aabot sa mahigit 30,000 ang namatay kasama ang maraming hindi naiulat sa media.
Kasabay nito, sinabi din ni Escudero na ipinakikita ng pagsisilbi ng warrant of arrest laban kay Duterte nang walang naging insidente na ipinatutupad lamang ng bansa ang pangako ko sa pagtataguyod ng international agreements.
“The peaceful and orderly service of the Interpol warrant—carried out without incident—reflects our nation’s commitment to upholding international agreements, as well as the maturity, civility, calm, and professionalism of all those involved: our law enforcement authorities, former President Rodrigo R. Duterte, his lawyers, and his supporters,” ayon kay Escudero.
Dahil dito, hiniling din ng lider ng Senado na tiyakin na mabibigyan ng kaukulang proteksyon ang karapatan ng dating pangulo alinsunod sa itinakda ng Rule of Law.
“As this legal process unfolds, we expect the International Criminal Court (ICC) to respect the rights of former President Duterte and to ensure that he is afforded due process in accordance with the Rule of Law,” ayon kay Escudero.
“This development will undoubtedly elicit diverse reactions shaped by differing perspectives on the allegations against the former president, from the families of victims of extrajudicial killings to his loyal supporters,” paliwanag pa niya.
Aniya, natural sa isang demokratikong bansa ang debate at hindi pagkakasundo sa isyu pero kailangan umusad ng bansa kaya’t hinikayat niya ang ating kababayan na iwasan at iresepteo ang magkabilang-panig.
“It is in our nation’s best interests to demonstrate our strength not by division, but by our capacity to rise above our differences and to collectively and peacefully uphold justice and accountability,” ani Escudero. (ESTONG REYES)
