SA kauna-unahang pagkakataon, tumalima ang gobyerno ng Pilipinas sa itinakdang benchmark ng United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) para sa sektor ng edukasyon.
Sa isang klatas, lubos na pinasalamatan ni Education Secretary Sonny Angara si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa pagtatakda ng P1.224 trilyong budget para sa sektor ng edukasyon.
Sa ilalim ng UNESCO benchmark, hindi dapat bumaba sa katumbas ng 4 percent ng Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ng bansa ang kabuuang pondo na ilalaan nito para sa sektor ng edukasyon.
“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa ating mahal na Pangulo dahil, sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon, compliant sa UNESCO standards ang budget ng edukasyon. Patunay ito na nasa pinakamataas na prayoridad ni PBBM ang edukasyon ng ating bansa,” pahayag pa ni Angara sa pagharap sa House Appropriations Committee para iprisinta ang hinihinging pondo ng Department of Education (DepEd) sa susunod na taon.
“This landmark move is not only an investment in education—it is an investment in the future of our learners, ensuring they receive the highest quality of education possible,” dagdag pa ng kalihim.
Sa ilalim ng 2026 National Expenditure Program (NEP) na isinumite ng DBM sa Kamara, ang DepEd ang mayroong pinakamalaking parte sa halagang P928.52 billion, ang State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) ay P134.99 billion, habang ang Commission on Higher Education (CHED) ay P34 billion, at sa Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) naman ay P20.24 billion.
Ayon kay Angara, ang DepEd budget proposal ay nakabatay sa 5-Point Reform Agenda kung saan ang P115.4 billion ay gagamitin para sa school operations, Senior High School Voucher Program, School-Based Feeding Program, at iba.
Mayroon ding ilalaan na P41.6 billion para sa construction, repair, at rehabilitation ng mga classroom at iba pang programa sa ilalim ng Basic Education Facilities Fund upang matugunan ang matagal ng problema sa kakulangan ng mga silid-aralan.
“DepEd will also strengthen its workforce by allocating P15.4 billion for additional Plantilla positions such as Project Development Officers and Administrative Officers to better support teachers. Meanwhile, P13.8 billion will fund the DepEd Computerization Program to advance digital learning,” sabi pa ni Angara.
Samantala, ipinahayag din niya na bilang isang makasaysayang hakbang, ang DepEd ay makikipag-ugnayan sa mga local government units (LGUs) kung saan ang huli ang silang direktang magkakaroon ng partisipasyon sa classroom construction, sa halip na ipamahalasa Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
“To create more options, DepEd is seeking flexibility in the 2026 General Appropriations Act (GAA), subject to Congress’ approval, so that LGUs and other partners may be engaged more directly in building classrooms,” saad sa kalatas ng kagawaran.
“DepEd emphasized that LGUs differ in capacity. Some may have the technical expertise, financial resources, and governance structures to move projects quickly, while others may still need more assistance.” (ROMEO ALLAN BUTUYAN II)
