SA pag-usad ng impeachment trial, hayagang malalantad ang tunay na kulay ng mga senador na tumatayong hukom sa paglilitis kay Vice President Sara Duterte.
Sa isang panayam sa programang Headstart ng ANC, binalaan ni Kabataan partylist Rep. Renee Co ang mga tinaguriang senator-judges sa umano’y nakaambang bwelta ng sambayanan sakaling makita ang pagkiling saan mang panig ng pagdinig.
Ayon sa militanteng kongresista, hindi lang ang hatol kay VP Sara ang binabantayan ng mga mamamayan, kundi maging ang pagiging patas at matapat sa pagganap ng mga senator-judges sa atas ng Saligang Batas.
Para kay Co, lubhang nakakabahala ang paglabas ng saloobin ng ilang senador hinggil sa kinakaharap na mga reklamo ng pangalawang pangulo — bago pa man sumipa ang pagdinig sa senate impeachment court.
“The rules of the Senate provide that the senator judges must maintain political neutrality at all times as the trial goes on. So now, we have different senators who are already on record putting their sides,” wika ni Kabataan partylist representative.
“But despite all that, nandiyan pa rin naman yung hope ng kabataan ng mamamayan that we will see a fair trial,” dugtong ng lider-kabataan.
Naniniwala si Co na ang impeachment trial ay hindi lamang magtatakda sa kapalaran ni Duterte, kasabay ng giit na ang paglilitis ay susukat din sa kakayahan ng Senado na protektahan at ipaglaban ang integridad ng Constitutional process.
“And if not, ang magiging on trial din is yung kakayahan ng Senado na panghawakan yung constitutional duty nila to sit as an impeachment court—to maintain political neutrality as provided by the rules, and to provide due process—the entire gamut of it from start to finish,” aniya.
Hindi kumbinsido ang mambabatas sa pananaw ng ibang nagsasabing walang patutunguhan ang impeachment proceedings kontra sa bise presidente.
“Accountability is never futile. Responding to the people’s calls for accountability against corruption is always a worthy endeavor. At the end of the day, what we want to happen is the complaints of citizens—that were given to the House of Representatives—see its day in court,” paliwanag ni Co.
“And whether some senators have loyalties or political interests at play, the continuing hope of the youth is that all those are not the controlling reasons why one decides one way or another.”
Samantala, ikinalugod naman ni Co ang paglabas ng tentative schedule para sa impeachment trial — “Well, for now, we welcome the announcement that there will be already the schedules that the Senate is arranging.”
“As to whether it’s going to be satisfactory, we’ll have to see whether the half-day schedule would be sufficient. But if it will be happening every day, as per the rules of the Senate and as already candidly shared, then we’ll see that the trial proceeding forthwith will satisfy that mandate,” dagdag ni Co.
Sa pahayag ni Senador Erwin Tulfo, sinabi niyang may mungkahing magsagawa ng pagdinig tatlong beses sa loob ng isang linggo — na magsisimula alas-2:00 o alas-3:00 ng hapon.
Ilalaan naman umano ang nalalabing mga araw ay para sa committee hearings, pagtugon sa pending motions, o regular sessions.
