MATAPOS ang pananahimik sa pag-aresto kay former President Rodrigo Duterte, lumutang na si Senador Ronald Dela Rosa, kasabay ng paghingi ng proteksyon sa Senado.
Hirit ni Dela Rosa kay Senate President Francis Escudero, hilingin sa Mataas na Kapulungan na tanggihan ang napipintong pagdakip sa bisa ng warrant of arrest kaugnay ng kasong crimes against humanity na inihain sa International Criminal Court (ICC) ng pamilya ng mga pinaslang sa ilalim ng madugong kampanya ng nakalipas na administrasyon laban sa droga.
Kasalukuyang nakakulong sa ICC headquarters sa Netherlands si Duterte.
Sa phone patch interview, ibinahagi ni Dela Rosa ang planong kausapin si Escudero sa lalong madaling panahon matapos sumingaw ang balita sa warrant para sa kanya at kay former PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde.
“Hanggat kaya ng Senate President [na] kupkupin muna ako na hindi muna niya ako i-surrender kung may warrant of arrest na [at] may session kami. I hope respetuhin din siya ng executive branch of government kasi meron naman yang mga ganon na protocol,” ani Dela Rosa.
Kabilang ang tinatawag na immunity sa mga pribilehiyo ng mga miyembro ng Kongreso.
“A senator or a member of the House of Representatives shall, in all offenses punishable by not more than six years imprisonment, be privileged from arrest while the Congress is in session,” saad sa Section 11, Article VI ng 1987 Constitution.
“These privileges are thus secured not with the intention of protecting the members against prosecutors for their own benefit, but to support the rights of the people, by enabling their representatives to execute the function of their office without fear of prosecution, civil or criminal.” (ESTONG REYES)
