PINAWI ng mga ranking member ng Kamara ang pangamba ng ilang senador na kabilang umano sa layunin sa pag-amyenda sa Konstitusyon ay ang pagbuwag sa Senado.
Sa isang joint statement, tahasang pinabulaanan nina Rizal Rep. Jack Duavit, na siyang namumuno sa Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) bloc sa Lower House; Bataan Rep. Albert Garcia, ang secretary general ng National Unity Party (NUP); Deputy Speaker at Ilocos Sur Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan; Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, ng Nacionalista Party (NP) at Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. (Pampanga 3rd Dist.) ang naturang hakbang at binigyan-diin na hindi nila susuportahan ito.
“With regard to the fears and allegations that the House would want to abolish the Senate, we would just like to let everybody know that as far as our party is concerned, there is no way we will be voting in any form to remove our five senators. And if we are not going to remove our five senators, then the other 19 senators can be assured,” pahayag pa ni Duavit matapos ang isinagawang House party leaders caucus na pinamunuan ni Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, na siya ring presidente ng Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) kamakalawa ng gabi.
Ang tinutukoy ng Rizal province lawmaker na mga NPC Senator ay sina Sens. Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Lito Lapid, Sherwin Gatchalian, at Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito. Sinegenduhan naman ni Singson-Meehan, na kasapi rin ng nasabing partido ang pahayag ni Duavit. “
To our Senate friends, kasi as part of NPC, we have five senators from NPC, and of course we will never abolish them. So we’re here to commit na hindi po masasama ‘yung mga usapang abolition ng Senate when we do amend the Constitution,” sabi pa ng Ilocos Sur lady solon.
Paggigiit nina Duavit at Singson-Meehan, ang sinusuportahan nila ay ang panawagan para sa pagkakaroon ng economic amendments sa Saligang Batas dahil batid nila ang paglakas ng foreign investments sa bansa ay magbibigay ng malaking oportunidad sa mga mamamayan partikular ang pagkakaroon ng trabaho o hanapbuhay.
Sa panig ni Garcia bilang kinatawan ng NUP, tiniyak din niya na hindi papanigan ng kanilang partido ang anumang hakbang para i-abolished ang Senado. “We just want economic reforms so that we can improve our economy to produce more jobs, better pay, and better lives for our citizens.”
Tahasang sabi pa ng Bataan lawmaker. Umapela naman si Barbers, na chairman ng House Committee on Dangerous Drugs at ranking leader ng NP sa mga senador na maging kalmado at pairalin ang parliamentary courtesy sa pagitan ng dalawang kapulungan.
“Let’s work towards achieving what we want to achieve for the country. Economic reforms are the key in achieving the goals and the objectives of our Bagong Pilipinas movement. We pray for their support and we would like to appeal to them to look at the better picture of doing something good for this country,” paggigiit ni Barbers.
Nanindigan naman si Gonzales, stalwart of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD), na hindi bahagi ng Charter reform advocacy ng Kamara ang anumang political amendments at binigyan-diin na “wala po kaming sinasabi na i-abolish natin ang Senado, guni-guni lang po nila ‘yan. Hindi po ‘yun totoo.”
Samantala, nagkakaisa ring inihayag ng mga ranking House leader ang kanilang matibay na suporta sa liderato ni Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez gayundin sa Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No. 6 na inihain sina Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri at Senators Legarda at Juan Edgardo Angara at nagsusulong para maamyendahan ang “restrictive” economic provisions ng 1987 Constitution.
