KUMPIRMADONG cyanide fishing ang sanhi ng pagkawasak ng bahura sa West Philippine Sea, ayon sa National Security Council (NSC).
Sa isang kalatas, partikular na tinukoy ni NSC Spokesperson Cornelio Valencia Jr. ang China na umano’y responsable sa pagkalason sa mga isda at pagkawasak ng coral reefs sa karagatang pasok sa 200-nautical mile Philippine exclusive economic zone.
Aniya, may ebidensyang patunay na ang mga dilaw na botelyang narekober ng Philippine Navy mula sa mga mangingisdang Intsik ay naglalaman ng cyanide.
Buwan ng Pebrero at Oktubre ng nakalipas na taon nang masabat ng ng Philippine Navy ang mga bangkang pangisda hindi kalayuan sa BRP Sierra Madre sa Ayungin Shoal.
Batay sa pagsusuri ng Forensic and Scientific Research Service ng National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), positibong lason ang laman ng mga botelyang gamit ng mga Tsino sa pangingisda.
“These laboratory findings remove any doubt as to the dangerous and unlawful nature of these activities,” saad sa isang bahagi ng pahayag ng naturang tanggapan.
Para kay Valencia, ang paggamit ng cyanide sa paligid ng BRP Sierra Madre ay isang uri ng pananabotahe.
“The deliberate use of cyanide raises serious concerns of illegal and destructive practices that threaten our Navy personnel in LS 57, the fragile marine environment of the West Philippine Sea, and the livelihood of Filipino fisherfolk.
“We wish to underscore that the use of cyanide in Ayungin Shoal is a form of sabotage that seeks to kill local fish populations, depriving Navy personnel of a vital food source. Moreover, cyanide can damage the reef which can ultimately compromise LS 57’s structural foundations. If the reef is severely damaged, it not only threatens LS 57’s stability, it also allows Beijing to fabricate an environmental crisis which it can then blame on the Philippines. It has in the past accused LS 57 of polluting the shoal in an effort to distract from its own illegal activities.”
