SADYA nga kayang totoo ang usap-usapan na malala ang korapsyon sa Timor Leste? Sa isang hindi inaasahang pagkakataon, kinansela ng korte sa Timor Leste ang house arrest laban sa wanted na kongresista.
Pag-amin ni Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, pinakawalan ng Timor Leste Tribunal mula sa house arrest ang sinibak na Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr.
“We confirm the published reports appearing on Timor-Leste (TL) media — which have reached our country — to the effect that Rep. Arnolfo Teves has been ordered released from house arrest by the tribunal conducting extradition proceedings relative to the request made by the Philippine government,” pahayag ni Topacio na tumatayong abogado ni Teves.
Gayunpaman, nilinaw ni Topacio na may mga kalakip na kondisyon ang pagpapalaya sa wanted na kongresista –“including regular reporting to a court officer and a commitment not to leave TL while the extradition case is pending, which conditions are customary in litigations of this nature.”
“Otherwise, he has been restored to full liberty in accordance with the order of the TL high court’s voiding of the preventive detention order due to defects in the extradition request,” dagdag ng abogado.
Kamakailan lang isinailalim sa house arrest ng Court of Appeals sa Dili, Timor-Leste si Teves na tinawag na “flight risk.”
Binanggit ng korte na dumating sa Timor-Leste si Teves sakay ng private plane noong Abril 2023 bunsod ng mahabang talaan ng kasong kriminal – kabilang ang pamamaslang kay Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo noong Marso 4, 2023 – na isinampa ng Department of Justice (DOJ).
Kabilang din sa basehan ng Timor Leste sa dating desisyon na isailalim sa house arrest si Teves ay ang kakayahan ng dating kongresista mangupahan ng bahay sa Timor Leste sa halagang $10,000 kada buwan – bukod pa sa 20 sinuswelduhang empleyado.
