MAS marami, mas matatag. Ito marahil nagtulak kay Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. na isulong ang pakikipag-alyansa sa bansang South Korea para sa isulong ang malayang Indo-Pacific region sa gitna ng lumalalang sitwasyon sa South China Sea.
Partikular na tinukoy ni Brawner ang “Squad” na binubuo ng mga bansang may kahalintulad na posisyon sa larangan ng seguridad sa Timog-Silangang Asya.
“We believe that they also have a stake in the security aspect of the region,” wika ni Brawner sa isang ambush interview.
“Even if we say this is an informal security architecture, we believe that more countries joining this would be beneficial because we are promoting in fact the same objectives, which is to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific and also a rules-based international order,” dugtong ng AFP chief.
Kabilang sa mga bansang kabilang na sa tinaguriang “Squad” na itinatag ng Estados Unidos ang Australia, Japan, at ang Philippines. Ang adbokasiya ng “Squad” — kapayapaan at kaayusan sa Indo-Pacific region.
Nang tanungin ng mga peryodista kung para saan itinatag ang Squad, nilinaw ng heneral na ang layunin ng alyansa ay hindi para sumagupa kundi para patatagin ang kakayahan ng mga bansa laban sa panunuwag, pambabarako, panggigipit at pananakop.
“Because the more countries that you have on your side, the better. You become stronger as a collective group rather than individual countries with their own interests. Because we found out that we in fact have common interests. Our countries have common interests,” aniya.
Kamakailan lang, nagsagawa ng sabayang pagsasanay ang mga miyembro ng “Squad” sa West Philippine Sea. Sa gitna ng joint military exercise, namataan ang mga barkong pandigma hindi kalayuan sa lugar ng pagsasanay.
“This underscores our shared commitments to upholding the right to freedom of navigation and overflight, other lawful uses of the sea and international airspace, as well as respect for maritime rights under international law, as reflected in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),” saad naman sa isang kalatas ng AFP.
