TALIWAS sa posisyon ng mga kapwa mambabatas, hindi suportado ni Senador Francis Escudero ang panawagang total ban sa Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO).
Katwiran ni Escudero na miyembro ng Senate Committee on Finance, lubhang malaki ang kailangan malikom ng pamahalaan kapalit ng aniyang mawawalang buwis na nakukuha mula sa mga POGO
“If we shut down their operations, we will raise taxes since we need to cover lost income,” sagot ni Escudero sa mungkahing total ban na panawagan ni Senador Win Gatchalian.
Pag-amin ni Escudero, mayroon naman aniya talagang ng mga POGO na puro perwisyo at sakit ng ulo ang hatid sa bansa. Gayunpaman, dapat din naman aniyang tingnan din ang katotohanan – lumobo ang kita ng Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) ng ilang daang milyon dahil sa POGO.
Sa datos ng PAGCOR, nakapagtala ng P59.96 bilyon (katumbas ng 66.16% increase) kita ang naturang ahensya noong nakalipas na taon – malayo sa P35.48 bilyong nasungkit noong 2021.
“My stand is that just because some are bad eggs, the solution is to ban all. I do not agree with that kind of principle and policy,” hirit ni Escudero.
Suportado rin ni Escudero ang paglalabas ng provisional license to operate sa mga POGO habang patuloy ang pagsusuri ng naturang tanggapan ng pamahalaan.
“I read in the news that PAGCOR has given all POGOs provisional licenses pending review, and that at the end of the review, will know how many will be allowed to operate. This is a good first step for PAGCOR to give temporary licenses pending a review of all as well.”
“The review of POGO is a good start but [PAGCOR] should coordinate with law-enforcement agencies, not to clear with them but of course so that it knows what’s going on to those it issued licenses,” pahabol ng mambabatas mula sa Bicolandia.
