HINDI pinalampas ng mga babaeng mambabatas ang makamundong pagnanasa ni Quezon City 4th District Rep. Bong Suntay sa aktres na si Anne Curtis sa gitna pa man din ng pagdinig ng House Committee on Justice sa impeachment complaints laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte kahapon.
Matapos pa lamang na ilitanya ng opposition lawmaker ang mga katagang “…nasa Shangri-la ako, nakita ko si Anne Curtis, ang ganda-ganda pala niya. You know, may desire sa loob ko na nag-init talaga. Na-imagine ko na lang kung ano ang pwedeng mangyari…” agad na umalma si House panel vice-chairperson at San Juan City Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora.
“Madam Chair, I would like to have those statements stricken off the record,” matapang na sambit ng San Juan City lady solon.
Para kay Zamora, ang namutawi sa bibig ni Suntay ay hindi dapat namumula sa isang mambabatas lalo pa’t ipinagdiriwang sa bansa ang National Women’s Month.
“Madam Chair, with all due respect to my friend Congressman Bong Suntay, it is just the start of the Women’s Month, and I don’t think that we should be hearing such comments from our dear colleagues. We’re not censuring anything, but we are reminding them that, in fact, we should support women by not saying these statements,” wika ng House panel vice-chairperson.
“The chair would like to state that if the manifestation of the justice member offends the sensitivity of the justice members, then it means we are crossing the boundaries already. After all, we rule here by the judgment of the justice members,” sambit naman ni House panel chair at Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro.
Pormal namang nagmosyon si Zamora na burahin sa record ng committee deliberations ang litanya ng Quezon City congressman. Ang resulta — 13 mambabatas ang pabor, isang kontra ( Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez) at dalawang piniling mag-abstain.
“Naman, are you, seriously?” dismayadong pahayag naman ni Zamora sa nag-abstain.
Sinabi rin ni Zamora na nakatakda siyang dumalo sa United Nations (UN) Conference on the Status of Women, kung saan kabilang sa talakayin ang pag-aalis sa mga balakid para lubos na maisulong ang “women’s empowerment.”
“Things like these do not empower women,” aniya sa paandar ni Suntay.
Sa panig ni House Assistant Minority Leader at Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Sarah Elago, iginiit niyang hindi katanggap-tanggap ang pahayag ni Suntay at dapat itong maglabas ng public apology.
“Ang pagbabahagi ng kanyang imahinasyon tungkol sa isang babae — anumang dahilan — ay tahasang pambabastos at pag-objectify sa kababaihan,” ani Elago.
“We stand firmly with women in denouncing this behavior from those in positions of power. There is no place for sexism and objectification of women by public officials. We will continue to demand respect, uphold women’s dignity, and push for accountability,” dugtong ng militanteng kongresista.
Maging ang House Committee on Women and Gender Equality, kinondena si Suntay, — “hindi simpleng biro o harmless na komento.”
“Ang pagre-reduce sa isang babae bilang object of sexual imagination, lalo na sa isang opisyal na pagdinig, ay tahasang sexist at nakakahiya. Wala itong lugar sa anumang institusyong dapat nagtataguyod ng respeto at profesionalismo.”
“Public office demands discipline and accountability. Freedom of speech is never a free pass for misogyny. Hindi namin ito palalampasin. Hindi namin ito ino-normalize. Patuloy naming ipaglalaban ang dignidad at karapatan ng kababaihan sa loob at labas ng Kongreso.” (ROMER R. BUTUYAN)
