HINDI maikubli ang pagkadismaya ng mga senador bunsod ng hindi pagsipot ng mga opisyal ng gobyerno sa pagdinig ng Senado sa kontrobersyal na ‘state-sponsored sugar smuggling.
Pag-amin ni Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chairman Francis Tolentino, napilitan ang komite na ipagpaliban sa ikalawang pagkakataon ang imbestigasyon dahil wala maski isa sa tatlong high-ranking government officials ang dumalo – sina Secretary Alfredo Pascual ng Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Secretary Arsenio Balisacan ng National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) at Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban Jr. ng Department of Agriculture (DA).
“Invoking the rules of this committee..and reiterating that the findings of this committee will not be based on speculations but on merits of the evidence that’s presented and not the weakness of the defense. Without the objections on the part of my colleagues this committee hearing is hereby postponed until further notice.”
Para kay Tolentino, lubos na nakakadismaya ang hindi pagsipot nina Panganiban at dating Sugar Regulatory Administration chief David John Alba.
Tugon naman ni Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, nasa Washington DC pa si Panganiban, habang nasa Vancouver, Canada naman si Balisacan.
“Yes, I think so… We will exert effort to ensure the appearance of all the relevant resource persons this committee will require us, which this committee invites,” sagot ni Bersamin nang tanungin ng mga senador kung may plano pang dumalo ang mga inanyayahan resource persons mula sa hanay ng administrasyon.
“Nakakalungkot po ‘yan. Pangalawang hearing na po natin ito eh. Sana ay masimulan na at matapos na…Gayunpaman, sa mga naririto magkakaroon pa tayo ng susunod na pagdinig kasama ang mga nabanggit ko na wala ngayon,” wika ni Tolentino.
Naunang naghain si Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros ng Senate Resolution 497 na humihiling sa naturang komite na imbestigahan ang irregularidad sa likod ng pagpasok sa bansa ng barkong may lulang 260 na 20-foot containers na naglalaman ng mga refined white sugar mula sa bansang Thailand.
