SA harap ng mga lider-parlamentaryong lumahok sa 14th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders Interface, nanawagan si House Speaker Martin Romualdez sa mga kapwa mambabatas para manindigan at depensahan ang karagatan ng rehiyon.
Partikular na iminungkahi ni Romualdez ang probisyon sa ilalim ng 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) na naglalayong isulong ang pandaigdigang kaayusan.
“We must move as one — translating ASEAN’s collective aspirations into concrete policies that empower our workers, farmers, and fisherfolks, protect our seas, connect our digital economies, and defend the rules-based international order,” wika ng lider ng 306-strong House of Representatives.
“This includes upholding the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS, which guarantees peace, security, and sovereignty for all,” dugtong ni Romualdez sa binigkas na talumpati sa pagtitipon ng mga opisyal ng iba’t-ibang bansang kasapi ng ASEAN na ginaganap na Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) sa Kuala Lumpur Convention Center sa Malaysia.
Binigyan-diin ni Romualdez ang malaking papel ng legislative institutions para tiyakin ang kapayapaan, patuloy na kaunlaran at paninindigan sa regional sovereignty.
Dagdag pa niya, ang regional peace at prosperity ay nakaangkla sa matibay na pagpapatupad ng international law sa gitna na rin ng nangyayaring pagkakahati-hati at banta sa maritime integrity.
Ipinunto ng lider ng Kamara na sa ilalim ng matatag na pamumuno Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., nagawang itaguyod ang “Bagong Pilipinas” na nakatuon sa pagkakaroon ng pagkakaisa, pagbabago at inklusibong kaunlaran, alinsunod sa layunin ng ASEAN.
“As Speaker of the House, I have made it my mission to ensure that our legislation is not just responsive — but visionary. Not just reactive — but catalytic,” mariing sabi pa ng Leyte solon.
Tiniyak din niya na patuloy na isusulong ng Philippine Congress ang mga prayoridad ng rehiyon sa pamamagitan ng pagbabalangkas ng mga batas na nakatuon sa pagpapalakas ng food security, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, cyber defense, at green, inclusive growth.
“We believe the role of AIPA is not only to support ASEAN’s vision — but to shape it — boldly and bravely,” aniya.
“As parliamentarians, we are not just lawmakers; we are bridge-builders across nations, generations, and ideologies. And it is our duty to ensure that this region remains a bastion of peace, prosperity, and shared progress.” (ROMEO ALLAN BUTUYAN II)
