TALIWAS sa karaniwang tikas ang ipinamalas ng Office of the Ombudsman sa posibleng kahihinatnan ni dating House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Bagamat tinukoy ni Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano si Romualdez bilang “central figure” sa tinaguriang flood control scandal, nilinaw ng opisyal na hindi nangangahulugan na may sala ang dating lider ng Kamara.
Aniya, nakakita lang ang Ombudsman ng sapat na batayan para ipagpatuloy ang isinasagawang imbestigasyon kaugnay ng alegasyon.
Una nang inihayag ni Clavano na magsasampa ng dalawang reklamo ang Ombudsman para sa preliminary investigation laban kina Romualdez, dating Ako Bicol partylist Rep. Zaldy Co, at iba pang pinaniniwalaang sangkot sa kasong plunder at paglabag sa Anti-Money Laundering Act.
“Once we receive his defense and that of his co-respondents, the case will be submitted for resolution, and the decision will lie with the panel of prosecutors whether or not the case should be filed in the Sandiganbayan,” ani Clavano.
Ang Office of the Ombudsman ang tumatayong prosecutor sa mga kaso ng katiwalian laban sa mga opisyales ng gobyerno.
“Our investigation identifies former Speaker Romualdez as the central figure in a scheme built on the diversion of public funds meant for flood control projects,” dagdag pa niya.
Bahagi umano ng mga ebidensya ang mga sinumpaang salaysay ng walong dating security personnel ni Co na pagpapatotoo sa umano’y pagde-deliver ng pera sa dating lider ng Kamara.
“This Office follows the evidence wherever it leads – regardless of the office once held, the influence still wielded, or the political weight of the name involved,” pahabol ni Clavano.
