BILANG isang public official, obligasyon ni Vice President Sara Duterte humarap sa Senate impeachment trial, alinsunod sa 1987 Constitution.
Ginawa ni Luistro ang pahayag bilang reaksyon sa tinuran ng mga abogado ni Duterte na ang pagharap ng nasasakdal sa trial proper ay nakabatay sa kanilang ipapayo dito, kung hindi o kinakailangan magpakita sa husgado.
“I understand that that is her prerogative whether to appear or not,” ayon kay Luistro.
Gayunpaman, nilinaw ni Luistro na isa ring abogado, awtomatikong “not guilty plea” ang itatala ng hukuman batay na rin sa rules of impeachment.
“And her non-appearance will simply be deemed as an entry of a plea of not guilty,” ani Luistro.
Subalit pata sa lead prosecutor, bahagi ng “constitutional duty” ni Duterte bilang bise presidente ang personal na partisipasyon sa impeachment trial.
“Nevertheless, in my personal opinion, appearing before the impeachment court is likewise a constitutional duty which public officials must comply with,” aniya pa.
“This is what we mean by public office is a public trust, and public officials must be accountable to the people at all times.”
